World history is long and varied, and throughout its long course, different empires and nations have emerged, some with great power and large territories, while others relatively weaker. Below is a ranking of the top ten empires in world history, where you can see the ten largest empires in history.

Top Ten Empires in History:

  1. The Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was established in 27 BC and fell in 1453 AD. At its peak, its territory centered around the Mediterranean and spanned three continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa, covering approximately 5.9 million square kilometers, making it one of the largest empires in world history in terms of territory.

2. The Han Empire

The Han Empire was established in 202 BC and fell in 220 AD, having a history of more than 400 years and advanced civilization. At its height, its territory extended to Korea in the east and Mongolia in the north, with a population of up to 65 million.

3. The British Empire

The British Empire, also known as the “empire on which the sun never sets,” was the largest empire in terms of territory in world history, covering 34 million square kilometers. However, after World War II, it gradually declined and its influence was divided among other countries.

4. The Russian Empire

The Russian Empire was established in 1721 and fell in 1917, and was also one of the top ten empires in history. Its territory spanned two continents of Asia and Europe, covering 22.88 million square kilometers, second only to the British Empire, and was one of the largest countries in the world.

5. The Spanish Empire

The Spanish Empire, also known as the Spanish Colonial Empire, was considered the first “empire on which the sun never sets,” covering territories from Mexico to East Asia, with a land area of 31.5 million square kilometers. However, it gradually declined in the struggle with England, France, and the Netherlands.

6. The Third Reich

The Third Reich, also known as Nazi Germany, was the period when the Nazi Party governed Germany and was one of the initiators of World War II. The Third Reich’s territory covered much of Europe, with a population of 78.8 million people. However, due to the failure of the Battle of Berlin, the empire collapsed.

7. The First French Empire

The First French Empire, also known as the Napoleon Empire, was established in 1804 and collapsed in 1815. Its territory covered most of Europe and it had over a dozen colonies in Africa, making it one of the ten largest empires in history.

8. The Macedonian Empire

The Macedonian Empire was established in 808 BC and collapsed in 168 BC. Its territory covered regions such as Egypt, the Persian Empire, and India. In 168 BC, it was conquered by the Roman Republic.

9. The Mongol Empire

The Mongol Empire was the largest empire in history and one of the ten largest empires in history. It spanned across Eurasia, from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Black Sea region in the west. Its territory covered over 30 million square kilometers and had a population of over 200 million. It gradually declined and fell in the late 14th century.

10. The Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Empire was established in 1299 and collapsed in 1923. It was a multi-ethnic empire created by the Turkish people led by the Ottomans. Its former territory spanned across three continents: Asia, Europe, and Africa. Its power gradually dissolved after World War I.
